WORD OF LIFE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY GRADES KINDERGARTEN - 5TH
The faculty and board members at Word of Life Christian Academy realize the importance of a strong Christian based curriculum. That is why we go out of our way researching many options. We feel we have compiled a comprehensive curriculum that not only meets all NYS learning standards; but also can meet the needs of each individual’s learning style.
The Bob Jones Curriculum is used for language arts, science, and social studies. Each subject is Biblically based and sets the stage for academic learning. Concepts are taught in a way that allows the child to build a strong foundation for learning and educational success.
The Association of Christian School International (ACSI) bible curriculum allows children to receive Biblical instruction at their age level. It is easy to understand and leaves them with a desire to know more! Each lesson includes: Scripture memorization, exciting activities and colorful workbook pages to help children fully understand each Bible story.
The highly acclaimed ACSI math program teaches concept development as well as computational skills. The prominent use of manipulatives incorporates hands-on instruction. Promotional features draw students to God the creator and include themes that integrate the patterns and numbers of God’s creations. Lesson designs focus on success for all students.
Word of Life offers children Christian role models at school who are able to daily demonstrate and reinforce Christ-like behavior, attitudes, and relationships. Our staff view Christian education as a ministry. The Bible teaches us to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. We take that command seriously and enjoy the chance to share God’s unconditional love. We are able to incorporate biblical teaching in areas such as character education, classroom relationships, and discipline.
Because our class sizes are smaller, children receive individualized attention. Teachers are able to give special attention where needed or to give an advanced learner some added challenges. Teachers are able to develop a close working relationship with students and their families in order to promote academic excellence. Our student to teacher ratio is 15:1.
Health and Nutrition
1 Corinthians 6:19 tells us “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own”. It is our responsibility to teach our children how to take care of their bodies through fitness and nutrition.
WOLCA has joined forces with New York State through the Schools and Professionals in Nutrition Program to promote health, safety and physical well-being. Our school underwent an extensive evaluation and survey to determine our strengths and weaknesses in eight topics: school health and safety policies and environment, health education, physical education, nutrition services, school health services, school counseling services, health promotion for staff, and family/community involvement. Our team is dedicated to the promotion and commitment to this program.
Chapel
Children and staff participate in Chapel every day. We begin the morning with prayer, worship through song and more.
Physical Education
We realize the importance of physical education and activity for our students. Studies have shown the correlation between physical activity and academic success. Our students engage in a minimum of 120 minutes of structured physical activity each week that follow NYS learning standards. Our PE instruction is led by dedicated and trained staff.
Music
Each week children are able to experience music class and are introduced to different styles of music and musical expression and music history. Children learn that music is also a form of worship. This is a wonderful chance for children to begin or expand their appreciation of music and song.
Art
Art class allows children to express themselves through different types of media each week. Students are taught art concepts appropriate for their age level. Each year they learn basic art concepts, art history, and more.
Library and Computer Lab
Children have full use of our school library each week. Children are able to sign out books from our library of over 500 items. Magazines, books on tape, and videos are also available for the students use. Our computer lab has eight computers available for children to sharpen their typing and computer skills under the direction and supervision of our librarian.
Spanish
WOLCA is introducing a brand new Spanish curriculum for our elementary students! “Pasaporte al espanol” provides easy instructions for teaching Spanish. The lessons combine listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Instruction includes: countries, songs, Bible verses, and vocabulary. Spanish songs keep students practicing grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation long after they’ve completed the program. Read-Aloud Books present words and structures with beautiful illustrations.
